Dean Word

Thank you for visiting our website; over 80 years as leaders in pharmacy teaching and innovation, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University is a comprehensive institution of higher education in Egypt. Our faculty is keen on working to achieve the primary goal of its mission to supply the community by highly qualified pharmacists capable of effectively exercising the profession of pharmacy and keeping pace with its constant evolutions. Faculty of pharmacy offers two well-structured five years pharmacy curricula namely the main stream program and the clinical pharmacy program. Both are fully accredited by National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE). The main stream (general) program served thousands of students since its launching in 18/6/1955 and still inspiring many faculties of pharmacy in Egypt and the middle east with its highly recognized standards

Industrial pharmacy is a discipline that comprises manufacturing, advancement, optimization, scaling up and appropriation of various drug delivery systems. The department deals with various dosage forms including novel nanotechnology-based dosage forms that target various life-threatening diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, and diabetic wounds.

The industrial pharmacy branch also covers the quality assurance, with its two branches: quality control and Good Manufacturing Practice, mainly to detect and eliminate any defects in the intermediate and final manufactured products.

The department aims at providing students with the theoretical basis of various unit operations involved in the manufacture of both pharmaceutical raw materials and pharmaceuticals along with the development, scaling-up and packaging of various dosage forms. The department also supplies the students with broad theoretical and technical knowledge in the drug design field.

The research domain deals with enhancement and assessment of physicochemical properties of drug moieties through their incorporation into various dosage forms.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology aims to establish the basic rules for the student in the field of pharmacology, whereby the student is informed of the therapeutic effects of different drugs, their indications, their toxicity, their side effects and their prohibitions in use in addition to their interactions with other drugs, and it is worth noting that clinical pharmacology is concerned with studying the therapeutic applications of drugs and how to choose the most appropriate ones. In the event that they conflict with each other or interfere with the functions of the body or the pathology of the patient

Toxicology is concerned with studying the harmful effects of drugs and other chemicals, how intoxication occurs with these substances and ways to prevent them, and ways to control complications of poisoning. The department also teaches bioassays and biostatistics

The department also supervises the teaching of some related medical courses and sciences such as histology, anatomy and physiology, where the student receives lectures in histology and anatomy with extensive information on the anatomical structure of the human body, and physiology provides the student with a scientific background for the courses he studies in Pharmacology, with the aim of giving the student a description of the functions of the various body organs, and the dysfunction that may result when the disease occurs

The Department of Pharmacology conducts high level scientific research that serves the needs of our community. Our multi-disciplinary research aims at developing new methodologies for drug discovery that identifies targets for drug development and reveals modulations in physiological and biochemical pathways in different disease conditions.

Pharmacognosy is the gateway into Pharmaceutical Sciences, today a highly interdisciplinary science which includes parts of botany, chemistry, ethnomedicine, nutraceuticals, biotechnology etc.. The name is derived from the Greek "pharmakon" = drug & "gnosis"= knowledge. Pharmacognosy encompasses a number of various disciplines, all aiding in the study and discovery of drugs of natural origin, including plant, animals, and marine organisms. During your course of study, you will be exposed to a wide range of topics, extensively covering all aspects of natural products. These include: sources of crude drugs and natural products, their medicinal importance, chemical composition, biosynthetic pathways, standardization and quality control as well as herb-drug interactions and phytotherapy.

You can find our laboratories on the 3rd Floor, Old Building and the 5th Floor, New Building.
