Thank you for visiting our website; over 80 years as leaders in pharmacy teaching and innovation, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Alexandria University is a comprehensive institution of higher education in Egypt. Our faculty is keen on working to achieve the primary goal of its mission to supply the community by highly qualified pharmacists capable of effectively exercising the profession of pharmacy and keeping pace with its constant evolutions. Faculty of pharmacy offers two well-structured five years pharmacy curricula namely the main stream program and the clinical pharmacy program. Both are fully accredited by National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE). The main stream (general) program served thousands of students since its launching in 18/6/1955 and still inspiring many faculties of pharmacy in Egypt and the middle east with its highly recognized standards

Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy that deals with the process of turning a new chemical entity or pure drug substance into a dosage form to be used safely and effectively by patients.

It is also called the science of dosage form design. Pharmaceutics helps relate the formulation of drugs to their delivery and disposition in the body. Branches of pharmaceutics include: Pharmaceutical formulation, Pharmaceutical manufacturing, Dispensing pharmacy, Physical pharmacy and molecular pharmacy.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology was founded almost 80 years ago and has been named earlier as the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology.  Our current name was granted by Alexandria University in 2017 when the Department made a major push to expand its focus into the complex interplay between microbe and host.

Microbiology and Immunology Department offers a comprehensive set of courses and seminar/tutorials for both graduate and postgraduate students. Moreover, the department bridges modern molecular biology with research on infectious disease and immunology. It consists of a vibrant community of faculty, researchers and students who share a common passion for research and learning.  Our staff members have made significant contributions to the fields of microbiology and immunology by studying bacteria, parasites, yeast and the immune responses in mice and humans. Members of the department publish their research in leading journals and present their work at prominent conferences and educational institutions. Our mission is to give the best possible education quality and research providing the most rigorous and inspiring training in the areas of microbiology, immunology, host-pathogen interaction and related fields. Our goal is to create responsible health care workers in the community who will improve human health.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an interrelated discipline combining synthetic organic chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, biochemistry, physical and computational chemistry.

It is concerned with the drug discovery and development process, starting from target identification, finding a lead compound, structure-activity relationship investigations to lead optimization, using different technologies such as In-silico screening and high throughput screening.

Also, it involves the study of the pharmacokinetic/ pharmacodynamic properties of different pharmaceutical active agents, their synthetic strategies, and the structure activity relationships of these drugs.

In addition, Pharmaceutical Chemistry concerns with identification and determination of drug concentration in different pharmaceutical dosage forms as well as in biological fluids such as plasma, serum and urine.

Pharmaceutical analytical chemistry is the branch of science that provides knowledge of compound separation, identification and quantification that can be employed in drug manufacturing process quality control in industry, measuring bioavailability of drugs, purifying drugs during synthesis, and uncovering drug metabolic pathways.

This curriculum explains the fundamentals of analytical chemistry and introduces the student to several types of qualitative and quantitative analytical methods. Starting from traditional gravimetric and titrimetric analytical methods and up to the most advanced chromatographic, electrochemical, and spectroscopic techniques applied in the pharmaceutical field. Accurate measurement of drugs in dosage forms or biological samples is critical and hence adequate information is provided to allow the student to use optimized analytical methods to ensure the integrity of the collected data. In addition, students will be familiarized with statistical methods for data analysis.

The department is mainly concerned with teaching the following undergraduate courses:

  • Physical and Inorganic Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry I
  • Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry II
  • Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry III
  • Instrumental Analysis
  • Quality control of pharmaceuticals

As for the postgraduate courses:

  • Applied Statistics
  • Advanced Chromatographic Methods of analysis
  • Bioanalytical Methods
  • Green Analytical Chemistry
  • Advanced electrochemical methods of analysis
  • Advanced spectroscopic methods of analysis
  • Quality control of pharmaceutical products
  • Specialized Analytical Techniques
  • Advanced Separation
  • Chemometric and Laboratory Intelligence Methods

The department is also interested in the development of advanced validated analytical techniques including Spectroscopic, Chromatographic, Electrochemical, and Chemometric methods for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds in their dosage forms and different biological matrices. These methods may be employed as valuable tools in conducting advanced interdisciplinary research in various pharmaceutical fields including pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and drug delivery etc.

The Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry laboratories are located in the 2nd Floor, Old Building (Instrumental Lab) and in the 6th Floor, New Building
